bigass arachnid
dunno what kind of spider this big thing is
but it just about got me while i was cutting the grass.
thick, sticky, huge web from the magnolia tree to the ground. thought i was a goner. figured lise would look out the window hours later wondering where i was and see this monster sucking away at my juices.

It’s possible you have an Araneus quadratus or a close relative thereof.

Regardless of colors/patterns, this shape/size of spider is usually called a “common garden spider.” Ugly, but not able to bite humans.
Now, down there where you are, if you should come across a spider with a violin pattern on its back, you SHOULD give that one a wide berth. Their venom causes serious ulceration of the skin that is not easy to deal with.

Remember that Chilean Rose tarantula my roommate at Gally had? Imagine if your little friend there was *that* big!?
