what’s on the bookshelf – april 2009
still on a pulitzer / man booker / national book award kick.
Â
struggled with Life of Pi at the beginning. had to stop, start, stop, start before it finally caught (and just before i gave up). at the 3/4 point, it’s good but will never be a favorite.
the best book i’ve read in at least a year?
shadow country by peter matthiessen.
it’s simply a story.
but it’s the telling of the tale, the imagery, the myriad voices used in telling, the different perspectives, the character development, the conclusion of each sub-book (there are three) that make this such a fantastic read.
no exaggeration – this book is a masterpiece.
least interesting book i’ve read this past year? the brief wonderous life of oscar wao. how this thing won the pulitzer prize for fiction last year is beyond me.Â
next up: the white tiger.

Funny story about Life of Pi. My mother is the biggest reader I know and she has amazing taste in books but she HATED Life of Pi. It practically haunts her. She’ll always says no more books with tigers on rafts! No more!

I agree on Oscar Wao. When I was done I just found myself wanting to re-read “White Teeth’ by Zadie Smith to wash the taste of it out of my brain.
Speaking of re-reading, I just completed my every two years or so re-reading of ‘A Prayer for Owen Meany’….every time I read it I remember why I call it my favorite novel of all time. And wonder why its 900% better than anything else John Irving wrote before or since.
