“Letter to a Christian Nation” by Sam Harris
“Thousands of people have written to tell me that I am wrong not to believe in God. The most hostile of these communications have come from Christians. This is ironic, as Christians generally imagine that no faith imparts the virtues of love and forgiveness more effectively than their own. The truth is that many who claim to be transformed by Christ’s love are deeply, even murderously, intolerant of criticism. While we may want to ascribe this to human nature, it is clear that such hatred draws considerable support from the Bible. How do I know this? The most disturbed of my correspondents always cite chapter and verse.”

As someone who’s been a Christian for 16 years, I think his statement is completely true and it shames me.
Last summer I attended with friends the local gay and lesbian festival they have downtown every summer. One of our close friends was helping with one of the shows so we wanted to go see the show and support him. Though I should have expected it I was shocked, appalled and sickened by the protesters camped out across the street. The signs they carried were laughable and the things they shouted were horrible. The most interesting part was that though some of these “Christians” were walking through the crowd witnessing, the only thing people were responding to was the hatred spewed by their friends with the signs.
Though I do feel a call to witness to those around me I also feel very strongly that I am not on this earth to judge. I am here to love and to SHOW others the love Christ has for them. And if they do not want to hear me just now I pray that God (who IS the ultimate judge and One who is in control) will bring someone into their lives who is able to bring them to Christ.
